The Howard Park Chardonnay is selected from our Allingham vineyard, located in the southern reaches of the Margaret River region between the hamlets of Witchcliffe and Karridale. This part of Margaret River is the Karridale subregion as proposed by Dr. John Gladstones. Here, the higher degree of cloud cover and prevailing southerly breezes facilitate a long, gentle ripening and the full evolution of flavour and fine structure that define the region’s finest Chardonnay.

Presented here in 1.5L magnum format which is ideal for long term ageing and the celebration of important milestones.

Pale lemon colour, with a lifted nose of grapefruit, melon, flint and savoury oak. A blend of Gin Gin and Dijon Chardonnay clones create a fruit profile of custard apple, red apple skin, lemon curd and green mango. There are prominent talc and saline mineral notes, typical of our Allingham vineyard, in the Karridale locale. Free run juice is barrel-fermented in a range of French oak barrels (30% new) with battonage, building texture and adding enticing savoury oak nuances and complexity. This Chardonnay is a beautifully balanced modern-classic style which speaks of Margaret River.

Drink alongside smoked rainbow trout with lemon cream, or karaage chicken with pickled daikon.

Full Tasting Note

There are going to be some marvellous, serious chardonnays from this great Margaret River vintage and here is a taste of what you can expect. A finely crafted modern chardonnay where elements have been dialled back but the underlying power and intensity that speaks Margaret River is unmissable. Opens with a mealy grapefruit and nougat quince mix on the nose. Then into the palate richer layered flavours that have come from the wild yeast and further barrel fermentation start to playout.

Fresh apricots, golden apples, lemons, salted butter and cedar on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with fresh acidity and a creamy, buttery texture. Supple finish.

White flowers, lemon, grapefruit zest and fresh-cut apple aromas. Don’t overchill this little charmer, it won’t like it and close down. It then goes on to explore bright citrussy flavours, pear and mandarin skin which mesh nicely with zesty, bright acidity. Oak is slurped up and the mouthfeel is mealy and gentle. The more time you are willing to give this wine, the more it will reveal. Just don’t overchill it, all right!
