Clos du Roi is a Premier Cru vineyard at the northern end of the Beaune appellation in Burgundy. Pascal Marchand owns and carefully tends some rows of vines in this vineyard, utilising the biodynamic practices he has honed over his three decades in Burgundy. Clos du Roi means “Kings Enclosure” in French – this vineyard was claimed for the crown by King Louis XI following the death of Charles the Bold, the last duke of Burgundy, in the 15th Century.

The soil in the vineyard is not particularly fertile; the Pinot Noir vines struggle against the elements and as a result produce small berries with concentrated fruit characters resulting in complex wines with intensity and structure.

Crimson purple in the glass, this wine opens with an elevated and perfumed nose; floral aromas of rose water, orange blossom and violets drift alongside brighter fruit notes of tart cranberry and red cherry with a soft, enticing lift of cinnamon quill. and gentle spice. The palate is graceful and well-framed; a full but finely structured expression that carries red fruits through to deeper notes of black plum, clove and mulling spice. Silky tannins and bright acidity give length and poise, while the wine’s quiet persistence suggests both early approachability and the confidence to age. Feminine, elegant, and quietly powerful, it’s a wine to savour now or revisit in years to come.
